Wrong on all counts, mostly. Los Angeles in the 1970s was still a city of 2 million people and no shortage of traffic--plus, American cars of the day were bigger, heavier, less fuel-efficient, had less safety equipment, and were mostly powered by large V-8 engines. My first car was approximately a 4.7-liter Ford coupe.1 It had lap belts only, and did not have power-assisted brakes.
