So… I was looking through a box earlier this morning that has a bunch of stuff I inherited from my uncle several years back. One of the things in the box was this shock-resistant, antimagnetic Waltham automatic that I figure dates back to the late 1940s or early 1950s, based on the dial design. I picked it up, looked at it, turned it over a couple of times, and set it down…and after what must be decades of sitting in a box (I never saw him wear it), it STARTED RUNNING. Apparently that was enough activity to trigger the self-winder. It's still running now, keeping good time, three and a half hours later. Amazing.
