Fascinating Wikipedia article on a Korean man who was forced to serve in the Imperial Japanese Army, captured by the Soviets, sent to the Gulag, then forced to serve in the Red Army on the Eastern Front, captured by the Germans and forced to serve in a Wehrmacht battalion, and finally captured in Normandy by the Americans.

And nobody can agree whether it's actually true or not.

Thank you! I must have excellent taste. ;-)

Russian watches have a slightly different aesthetic than watches from the West, often with a retro feel to them since many of the case designs date from the Soviet era. I rather enjoy the difference. :-)

My latest inexpensive watch acquisition--a Vostok Komandirskie. I love the retro Soviet art deco looks of it.

That is how I picture 's office once the Ranchero is finally done. :-)

I hope you can see a neurologist soon. There's obviously an underlying cause that needs to be diagnosed.

Just checked my feed on Twitter, and without going into excessive detail, if you picture Donald Trump driving naked down Pennsylvania Ave. in a gold-plated convertible Cadillac with his pubic hair on fire, being chased by Bernie Sanders screaming something about Amazon, with Mueller quietly taking notes on the sidewalk, you'll get the general drift of what it's like.

First day back in the office after a six-day vacation. Six hours and 23 minutes after getting here this morning, I might finally be caught up.

In other news, a friend living abroad who just finished a PhD in ancient philosophy is surprised to find he's having a hard time finding academic work. I'm guessing that European academic advisors are less forthcoming than American ones about the fact that finding any kind of job with a humanities PhD is basically Vegas odds.

On the whole, not a bad way to end what amounted to my annual vacation this year.
