He's three levels up from me. We're not overly rigid about the chain of command, but I usually don't have a lot of direct interaction with anyone more than two levels above me in my chain. That's partially because until the new guy was hired, the third level above me was the divisional vice-president.

Slack kind of faded away here, mostly because only the programmers were using it, and only among themselves. I have a personal Slack team (just me) that I use for certain notifications and reminders, and it's great for that.

I feel like that's my job sometimes…

I have no doubt whatsoever that nothing will completely replace it. It's common, cross-platform, standardized, and thoroughly entrenched.

As a side note, we've tried using Slack at work, and that didn't stick. We've tried Skype messaging--that didn't stick. What sticks is email. Megabytes' worth of bloody email. Often with half a dozen people CC'd.

Yep. The email just keeps on coming…

I think it went well. I probably could have answered a few things better, but he was direct and engaging and it was very conversational. We also discovered we had a couple of other things in common in our respective pasts, so overall I'm calling it a success.

Why isn't it 5:00 PM PDT yet?

Sounds like a good day to stop at the pub on the way home.

Half-hour one-on-one meeting with the new director ended up being an hour-long meeting. I think it went well.
