I occasionally work from home when necessary, but I prefer not to. I like to have some separation between my work life and my home life, and in any case, I don't have a proper office space set up at home, and it's much harder to access internal systems also (even over the VPN).

Yes, just my daily commute works out to about 482 km also. I drive an average of 20,000-25,000 miles a year (roughly 32,000-40,000 km), and that's been pretty consistent for the last couple of decades.

As for the biggest engine in a car I've driven, that's probably the 429 cubic inch (7-liter) engine in my grandmother's 1965 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. The car weighed approximately as much as Tower Bridge, so you needed a lot of engine to get it moving.

I just did a quick calculation, and we're paying around 68-70p per liter if my math is correct.

The engine sizes of every vehicle I've ever owned, in order of ownership, were: 4.7l ('66 Ford Galaxie 500), 1.6l ('81 Ford Escort), 2.2l turbo ('85 Dodge Omni GLH Turbo), 1.8l ('90 VW Jetta), 2.4l ('95 Nissan Pickup), 2.0l ('04 Hyundai Elantra), 1.5l ('10 Honda Fit), 2.5l ('13 VW Jetta).

Although California probably has the most expensive gasoline in America, it's still cheap by global standards. Also, as you know, Americans love bigger vehicles, in part because of the distances that we often drive. You don't want to be crammed into a Nissan Micra for 8 hours driving across Nevada. And I can't remember the last time any automaker offered a 1.0l car for sale here, except possibly Smart (which has been an abject failure here).

It's pretty average over here for what we consider a basic midsize sedan. My Jetta had a 2.5. In comparison to the 6.2 Dodge Challenger that one of my colleagues recently bought, it's quite modest.

So…unless something goes wrong, tomorrow I will be picking up this as my next car. A Hyundai Sonata 2.4-litre, built in and imported from the noted Korean province of Alabama.1 ?

  1. Yes, it's an ex-rental.

Sometimes you get lucky. It helps to have a family member willing to loan you the cash, too. :-)

Looks like I've found my next car. Won't get it for a few days, but they'll call me when it's ready.

Reminds me that I'll have to wear a quartz watch. Don't want to risk magnetizing one of my mechanicals in the metal detector.

The best part is that I'm also scheduled for dental implant surgery that week. Would be tempting to show up high as a kite on pain meds.
