Gash on my arm but no other obvious injuries. No stitches required. Claim reported to insurance company. Time for some food and a stiff drink, but I don't keep alcohol in the house, so I will probably settle for stress-eating ice cream1 straight from the carton.

  1. No sugar added, of course.

Had a little car accident. Waiting to be seen at urgent care. I'm OK, just have a cut up arm.

Not sure if I should post the blog post I just wrote (it's on Israel and Palestine). Will have to think about it.

Well, you'll be missing all the fun. ?

Also, I never had to ask someone to clean a toilet with a toothbrush. I did, however, have to ask someone once to help clean an extensive amount of human feces off a restroom wall. We did it together.

//

But you may occasionally have to ask them to do something not-fun.

"Code monkey think maybe manager wanna write goddamn login page himself…"
//

You're welcome--it's mostly common sense. And there's one more thing that's very important--never ask a subordinate to do something you wouldn't do yourself.

I immediately think "wrong number."

My approach to management is simple: find good people, give them plenty of leash, check in regularly but don't micro-manage, praise in public and reprimand in private. Also don't forget to say thank you, always say please, and if anyone makes the mistake of thinking that saying please means it was a request and not an order, correct their impression quickly.

Both, actually. I am a pretty good manager (I think), but I don't enjoy it all that much.
