Nobody ever believes me, but the easiest language I ever studied was Russian. Sure, the vocabulary is often unfamiliar, and you have to learn another alphabet, but once you do the spelling is largely phonetic and the sentence structure is close to that of English.

Sorry. I remember that it goes there, but not why. Too many years since my last German grammar lesson. If it helps, think of it like archaic English (which isn't as silly as it may sound): "I asked him a question, but he answered me not."
